I caught up with chess buddy Calvin for a quick beer after work.
All upbeat..
If we sprinkle in bummer stuff,we do it with good humor.
We converse about loving garden grown tomatoes, I suggest a tomato sandwich.
“toast white bread,spread a thin layer of mayo,add Creole seasoning,add tomato”
He replies that he doesn’t like mayo and I make a remark about him rejecting his Caucasian heritage.
The bartender,she laughed, and as a white dude you always feel good if you can get a black person to laugh.
We talk about culture.
And food.
And foreign food.
And authors and music and happy stuff..
Then..we talk about the heat..
I’m short on those real life conversations,so it was good to see him.
We have a lot in common.
And he is much more intelligent than the job he has…
But he doesn’t complain about it…he just hangs out at the bar…which is why I don’t see him much..
Also, I see no sin in the single bottle of beer I had ,on a day when the goddamn planet is on fire.
If I sat and had 5,I’d feel some guilt…and it’s a slippery slope and blah blah blah blah…
If you’re an alcoholic,then I sympathize and understand that you can’t have “A” beer.
