I’m teaching my helper how to terminate cables, an actual useful skill.
He loves it, gets to feel like he’s not just a delivery driver.
A coworker asked me why I was teaching him, I said
“So he doesn’t feel like he’s in a dead end job”
Which was probably a poor choice of words…
Look..
I think some people have kids and become financially tied to whatever shit job they’re doing..
I think other people…buy stuff.
They get comfortable with the stuff and even go into debt for it…you’re trapped either way..
And showing this kid a simple data termination..he asked
“How many of these have you done?”
Thousands..easily..
Maybe not ten thousand,,but def thousands..
Hey man…you can take this,,this stuff I’m showing you.. you can apply it and get a job at a livable wage.
But please don’t get stuck.
Don’t settle in…
He’s in an entry level gig, $16 an hour.. running deliveries,unloading trucks,, doing the things I don’t have time for…
Within two weeks, he bought a car,,,
21 years old,,,saddled with a car payment.
Pretty standard..
He’s a tiny guy, but a UFC super fan.. and I’ll walk around the corner and catch him shadow boxing..
But,,where people can see.. as in..
He wants to project. Pro- ject..
Maybe he’s a good fighter.. I don’t know.
He’s not a bad kid,,just 21.
And always does what i ask without complaining,,
And that’s why i told him..
“Look man..take this next six months, and practice the things I’m showing you… then you can get out there and get a decent wage..and you’ll never have to look for a job”
So he has..
His terminations look great and I’m proud of him,,
(He’s slow..)
I’d rather the work be slow and right,,,rather that over fast and sloppy…
He’s a good kid…
